let me start with a quotation of Swami Vivekananda. Education is the manifestation of perfection inside a man. The idea of education was to develop the character and personality of a person inside and outside both. But had we seen the purpose ever! The answer is a straight no. The Indian education system is going through a rough and dark road and to bring it on a specially prepared surface, we have to bring some changes in the education system.
*Medium of language – Over emphasizing on English is giving a negative result. The rural areas and small-town students are mostly affected by this. They don’t understand the language well and in this way, they are losing their grasp on their local linguistic by focusing on the colonial ruled language.
*Financial Literacy – To teach the students how to make money work and manage for you. The role of money in the society and economy. Still, Entrepreneurship is unknown to many students and their teachers too.
*Focusing on a world view, rather than focusing on narrow mindedness- The current education system focuses on nationalism and its good too. But doing too much anything is wrong. Schools should also give a global outlook to students, the game of international relations and business.
*Lack of innovation and no critical thinking- In our country, the rat race is very high and this kills innovation and creativity. The system should encourage the students about thinking in all the possible ways, a 360-degree approach. Rote learning should be diminished.
*Change in teachers- A whole bunch of new teachers who are well trained and efficient should be brought. In the current ASER report, it is stated that class 8th students are not able to read class 3rd books in govt schools. Whose fault is this! The teachers should also be judged on the basis of their teachings. The whole burden should be on teachers, how they are going to make students ready for a highly competitive world.
* Tell the real meaning of Education – In the year 2014, around 22000 students committed suicides, this shows the gap between the students and their education. Teachers should boast students to follow their passion. If the students would love their education, this would seriously eradicate the whole suicide data from the NCRB.
*Emphasis on self-learning- The best way to learn is to learn by self. When Newton discovered the law of gravity, there was no one to teach him about it. He himself introduced this law to the world. The government should promote institutes like Ignou more.
*Benjamin Franklin’s way- Tell me and I forget, Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn. In simple words Learning by doing.
*Reducing commercialization and poor governance in higher education – The quality assurance and accreditation mechanism should acknowledge the transformative role of education.
*Should focus more on high-quality education in India- According to a report of TISS, Indians spend 45000 crores every year for higher education in foreign lands. Just imagine if the Indian govt would invest in good institutions in India. The money will remain in India only and would help India in better ways. This will also stop the brain drain game.
*Need of more IITs, IIMS, and other fine arts college- We need an IIT and IIM in every state and we also need more liberal arts colleges. Arts can promote moral and integrity in a person.
Ending with few lines from the book WINGS OF FIRE of our former president of India to show he was also concerned about the education system. The only line prominently drawn in our country today is between the heroes and the zeroes. On one side there a few hundred heroes keeping 950 million down on the other side. This situation has to be changed.
